The Yaz Resource Center, a patient advocacy group, is alerting women who have suffered side effects after taking the birth control drugs Yaz and Yasmin that Bayer Pharmaceuticals is currently settling claims. In 2009, The British Medical Journal published studies from Denmark and the Netherlands linking the chemicals in Yaz to blood clots. In October, 2011 the FDA also released data of more than 825,000 women taking oral contraceptives which showed drugs like Yaz could cause up to a 74% increased risk of developing blood clots.

As news spread, thousands of women who had taken Yaz filed injury claims for blood clot-related conditions such as stroke, Deep Vein Thrombosis, and Pulmonary Embolism.

According to a federal Multi-District Litigation court established in Illinois to handle Yaz cases, nearly 12,000 people have filed a Yaz lawsuit. The formal case style is Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2100, S.Dist Ill).

Bloomberg News originally reported on April 13, 2012 that Bayer would settle 500 of the lawsuits at approximately $ 220,000 per case. The company has now reported in its Stockholders’ Newsletter for the first quarter that it has paid $ 142 million in settlements, at an average of about $ 218,000 a case.

With news of settlements growing, the Yaz Resource Center has received calls from patients who have been promised quick settlements and lawsuit proceeds within days.

The Yaz Resource Center cautions patients that while Yaz settlements are available, only certain law firms will be able to secure settlement of their cases. It typically takes months for medical records and documents to be approved before proceeds are received. Anyone who is told otherwise should be suspicious.

Patients who settle a Yaz lawsuit may be offered an advancement or loan on their case, however, this should be avoided if possible as these types of loans often charge high interest rates of 30% or more.

molo’s ‘paper music’ installation · Milan Design Week 2012

Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen, co-founders of the Canadian multidisciplinary design studio molo, along with American sound artist Ethan Rose, recently exhibited prototypes that turn molo’s award winning softwall room dividers into speakers. The sound system does not use traditional speakers but instead seamlessly integrates transducers which sonically activate the paper-like layers that make up the structure of the expandable and flexible partition wall.

molo demonstrated the system during Design Week in Milan, Italy from April 17th to 22nd, 2012 in the form of an exhibit entitled “paper music”. Ethan Rose created a sixteen channel composition that drew from a range of musical and paper sounds. Rose’s composition resonated within a passageway of yellow molo softwalls. The exhibition took place in the 16th century cloisters of Milan’s Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia for the duration of Milan Design Week.

As part of molo’s continuing exploration of flexible walls and temporal space making, this installation marked the introduction of a new vibrant yellow colour for molo’s textile softwall + softblock modular system. The colour allows the material to retain its translucency while enhancing the quality of light transmitting from behind or within the softwall. Variation of luminance results from the shape and nature of the wall. The colour is printed directly on the textile as acrylic ink, with a transparency that draws attention to the delicate pattern of the material’s fibres. molo now has the ability to offer textile softwall to customers in any Pantone colour using the same printing method.

molo will demonstrate the system again during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City from May 19 – 22, 2012. During the New York exhibition Rose’s composition will play within a room constructed from molo’s indigo blue paper softblocks.
